What and where Alta Vista is

An established central neighbourhood with mature trees, mid-century homes, and the General Hospital and CHEO close by. The Alta Vista Community Association draws it as the part of Alta Vista Ward south of Smyth Road, north of Walkley Road, east of the Rideau River and Bank Street, and west of the greenspace under Haig Drive.

The neighbourhood and Alta Vista Drive, its main street, are named for their height: the area sits higher than most of the city.

The name is used loosely. It can mean the whole ward, or only the core around Alta Vista Drive between Pleasant Park Road and Heron Road, so ask which one a listing means. The area takes in smaller neighbourhoods:

  • In the north: Rideau Park, Faircrest and Applewood Acres.
  • In the south: Ridgemont.
  • Also within it: Billings, Canterbury, Guildwood Estates, Heron Gate, Playfair Park and Urbandale Acres.

What homes in Alta Vista are like

The first subdivision, Rideau Park, was built in 1892 on land of the Billings Estate used by market gardeners. Alta Vista began to be suburbanised in the 1950s, with Rideau Park growing and Faircrest Heights and Applewood Acres built in the north, Ridgemont in the south and Elmvale Acres in the east. Urbandale Acres followed in the 1960s.

The result is a highly residential neighbourhood of mid-century streets, with several schools, community centres, places of worship of many faiths, and a large amount of greenspace and parks.

Why the hospitals matter to Alta Vista buyers

Three hospitals sit on or near Alta Vista’s northern edge. The Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) are on the north side of Smyth Road, in Riverview, and the Riverside Campus is at Smyth Road and Riverside Drive. If you work at one of them, the streets just south of Smyth Road put you closest.

How to get around Alta Vista

  • The OC Transpo Transitway runs through, with Pleasant Park and Riverside stations inside the neighbourhood and Billings Bridge and Smyth stations just outside.
  • Alta Vista Drive is the main street through the middle of the neighbourhood.
  • Shopping at Billings Bridge Plaza, at Bank Street and Riverside Drive, and the Elmvale Shopping Centre, at St. Laurent Boulevard and Smyth Road.

Hunt Club, south of Alta Vista

Hunt Club is a community in River Ward, in the south end of Ottawa, just north of the airport and east of the Rideau River. The Hunt Club Community Organization defines it as bounded by the Rideau River on the west, the Airport Parkway on the east, the CN and Via Rail lines on the north and Hunt Club Road on the south.

It is named for the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, first developed in 1876.

Like Alta Vista, Hunt Club was part of Gloucester Township until Ottawa annexed it in 1950. It was built from the 1970s as a mainly residential community, and many of its houses date from then. Housing includes detached and semi-detached houses, townhouses, apartment buildings and retirement homes.

  • Sub-neighbourhoods, from west to east: Quinterra, Hunt Club Woods, Hunt Club Estate and the Western Community.
  • Seven city parks: Cahill, McCarthy, Owl, Paul Landry, Riverwood, Uplands and Uplands Riverside.
  • About 16% of the area is accessible green space, including the Sawmill Creek wetlands and the Rideau River shoreline.

Schools in Alta Vista

  • Public elementary: Alta Vista, Arch Street, Featherston Drive and Pleasant Park Public Schools.
  • Public secondary: Ridgemont High School and Canterbury High School.
  • Catholic: St. Gemma, Ste-Geneviève, St. Patrick’s Intermediate and St. Patrick’s High School.

Confirm the school for a specific address with the board before you offer. Alta Vista and Hunt Club both came from the old township of Gloucester; see Gloucester on our Ottawa neighbourhoods page.
