Stittsville Homes for Sale

Stittsville is a suburban community immediately southwest of Kanata, about 20 km west of downtown Ottawa, in the former Goulbourn Township. Its urban area is Stittsville Ward, and the village it grew from was founded in 1854, when its first post office was built.

Stittsville houses for sale range from homes near Old Stittsville and Main Street to the newer subdivisions on the ward’s edges.

What Stittsville is, and where it came from

A former village in Ottawa’s west end that keeps its own main street, with newer neighbourhoods, parks and the Trans Canada Trail. Goulbourn Township was settled from 1818 by Irish soldiers after the War of 1812, and the village took its name from Jackson Stitt, its first postmaster, in 1854. The original village, now called Old Stittsville, centred on Carp Road.

The Carleton County Fire of 1870 destroyed almost all of Stittsville. Villagers rebuilt around the new railway, which later became part of the Canadian Pacific. The last train ran on January 14, 1990, and the rail line is now a section of the Trans Canada Trail, running along Abbott Street East, across Stittsville Main Street.

Buildings that survived

  • Kemp’s Tavern on Hazeldean Road, built in 1868, one of the few buildings left standing after the 1870 fire.
  • Green’s Hotel, 1510 Stittsville Main Street, built in 1890 or 1894 as the Pacific Hotel for railway travellers.
  • The Bradley/Craig barn and farmhouse at 590 Hazeldean Road, the barn built in 1873.

Why Stittsville Main Street is the centre of town

Stittsville Main Street is the community’s main commercial road. The Trans Canada Trail crosses it along Abbott Street East, and Green’s Hotel still stands on it at number 1510. Around it, the Royal Canadian Legion branch meets in the former Orange Hall, and Stittsville United Church, one of the oldest congregations in Stittsville, keeps its 1883 brick chapel within the current buildings.

The town’s services are close at hand: Ottawa Fire Services station 81, the Ottawa Police Service’s Huntmar station, the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library and a ServiceOntario office.

Where Stittsville is growing and the new Stittsville houses for sale it adds

  • 2006: the ward was redrawn to the urban community, adding a small part of former Kanata around the Canadian Tire Centre.
  • 2014: the new Blackstone subdivision moved into Stittsville Ward.
  • 2020: the ward boundary review added land on the northern and southern edges for proposed housing developments.

So a Stittsville search can mean a house near Old Stittsville and Main Street, or a newer one in the subdivisions on its edges, and the two are worth comparing separately.

How to get around Stittsville

The main roads are Stittsville Main Street, Hazeldean Road and Carp Road, with Kanata directly to the northeast. No O-Train line reaches Stittsville. For walking and cycling, the Trans Canada Trail follows the old rail line through the middle of the community.

Questions

Questions about Stittsville

Stittsville suits buyers who want a suburb with a village core of its own: Stittsville Main Street, the Trans Canada Trail along the old rail line, a library branch, a fire station and a ServiceOntario office, with Kanata and its technology parks directly to the northeast. Three school boards run schools here.

The trade-off is transit. Stittsville is about 20 km west of downtown and no O-Train line reaches it, so most trips start on Stittsville Main Street, Hazeldean Road or Carp Road.
