Rockland Homes for Sale
Rockland is a community on the Ottawa River about 30 km east of downtown Ottawa. It is not in the City of Ottawa: it is the largest community in the City of Clarence-Rockland, in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, and it is outside OC Transpo’s service area.
What Rockland is, and why it is not part of Ottawa
Rockland was incorporated as a town in 1908 and stayed a separate town until January 1, 1998, when it joined Clarence Township to form the City of Clarence-Rockland. That city sits immediately east of Ottawa on the Ottawa River and also includes Bourget, Cheney, Clarence, Clarence Creek, Hammond and Saint-Pascal-Baylon. Its administrative offices are in Rockland, its largest community.
For a buyer, that changes who does what:
- Property taxes, by-laws and municipal services come from the City of Clarence-Rockland, not the City of Ottawa.
- There is no City of Ottawa ward and no OC Transpo service.
The name comes from William Cameron Edwards, who opened a sawmill at McCaul point in 1868, was the first postmaster, and named the place for its rocky landscape.
What homes in Rockland are like
Through the 1970s Rockland was a small community. Since 2000 it has grown quickly: fewer than 60 or 70 new homes a year were built before 2000, and 2,185 were built between 2000 and 2010. So a Rockland search takes in many homes built since 2000, alongside the older town centre.
How to get from Rockland to Ottawa
- Prescott-Russell Road 17, a two-lane road, bypasses the centre of Rockland to the north, with big-box stores along it.
- Heading west it becomes Ottawa Road 174, toward Orléans and downtown Ottawa by Highway 417.
- Calls to widen Highway 174 between Trim Road and Rockland have been made, and the City of Ottawa had previously refused funding.
- The Leduc commuter buses to downtown Ottawa and Gatineau have been suspended since 2020.
On the Ottawa side, Trim station near Trim Road and Highway 174 has a Park & Ride lot of about 1,089 spaces served by OC Transpo’s Rapid Route 39. More on east-end transit is on our Orléans page.
Recreation and schools in Rockland
- A 45,000-square-foot recreation centre, opened in 2008, with a library, a YMCA, an indoor pool, a gymnasium and a theatre.
- A sports centre opened in 2011, with ice rinks, soccer fields, a baseball diamond and a running track.
- Du Moulin Park, with boat ramps to the Ottawa River, Simon park and its baseball field, and the Rockland Golf Club.
Schools
Rockland has English public, French public, English Catholic and French Catholic schools, including Rockland Public School, St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School, École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Trinité, École Carrefour Jeunesse, École secondaire catholique L’Escale and Rockland District High School. Many students attend St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School in nearby Hammond.
Between Rockland and Orléans: Cumberland
Between Orléans and Rockland, east of Trim Road and inside the City of Ottawa, the land stays mostly rural toward Cumberland Village. Read about Cumberland on our Orléans page.
