Nepean real estate

Nepean Homes for Sale

Nepean is the part of Ottawa west of the inner core, an independent city until the 2001 amalgamation, with about 186,593 people in the 2021 Census. Barrhaven, Bells Corners and Centrepointe grew inside it, Merivale Road is its retail centre, and our office is on Colonnade Road.

Nepean houses for sale run from 1950s bungalows to new towers on Baseline Road.

How Nepean grew from a township into a city

Nepean Township, first known as Township D, was established in 1792 and once took in what is now central Ottawa west of the Rideau River. Its town hall stood in Westboro until Ottawa annexed that area in 1950. The township’s centre then moved to Bells Corners, and through the 1950s and 1960s its urban area spread over farmland toward Centrepointe in the east and Barrhaven in the south.

Nepean became a city on November 24, 1978, named after Sir Evan Nepean, a British Under-Secretary of State. It had 124,878 people when it joined the new City of Ottawa in 2001. A Nepean quarry supplied the sandstone that is the principal building material of the Parliament Buildings.

Nepean houses for sale, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

Nepean is not one kind of street. These are the parts a search here usually covers:

  • Centrepointe, built from 1984 between Baseline Road, Woodroffe Avenue and the CN line, mostly by Minto: about 1,000 detached homes, the rest mostly townhomes and terrace homes. As of 2024, two Richcraft condominium towers of 22 and 24 storeys at 19 Centrepointe Drive and a 15-storey rental building at 2140 Baseline Road were under way.
  • Bells Corners, inside the western Greenbelt along Robertson Road, with the 1950s and 1960s homes of Lynwood Village and the denser Westcliffe Estates (more below).
  • Knoxdale-Merivale Ward, between the Rideau River and Fisher Avenue on the east and Highway 416 and Cedarview Road on the west, including Craig Henry, Arlington Woods, Parkwood Hills and Merivale Gardens.
  • Barrhaven, which grew from Nepean’s expansion south and has its own page: Barrhaven homes for sale.

Bells Corners houses for sale, inside the western Greenbelt

Bells Corners is a suburban neighbourhood along Robertson Road, west of downtown and within Ottawa’s western Greenbelt, in College Ward. It had 9,385 people in the 2021 Census. It is named after Hugh Bell, who kept a tavern there from 1834 to 1863, and most of it burned in the Great Fire of August 1870.

Lynwood Village and Westcliffe Estates

Many Bells Corners houses are in Lynwood Village, also called Bells Corners East, which Bill Teron built from 1958 to 1966. It is one of the first examples of tract housing in Ottawa, and it now has more than 1,700 homes. To the west, Westcliffe Estates (Bells Corners West) was founded in 1969, has more than 2,000 homes and is denser than the rest of the community.

  • Most homes lie south of Robertson Road, and most of the businesses and industry to the north of it.
  • The Robertson Road strip has been a Business Improvement Area since 2009, and it carries commuter traffic between Kanata and the city centre, so rush hour there can be slow.
  • Nine public parks, the Bell Centennial Arena, an outdoor pool at Entrance Park and the Lynwood Park Tennis Club.
  • Bellwood Estates, a 256-home mobile home park established in 1959, is also in Bells Corners.

Why Merivale Road and Colonnade Road matter in Nepean

Merivale Road, running north to south, is Nepean’s retail centre, with smaller shops and big box stores. The Colonnade Road Business Park, west of Merivale Road, holds federal offices including the Public Health Agency of Canada, and an OC Transpo bus depot. Our office is in it, at 75D Colonnade Road North.

Hunt Club Road West has an auto mall, big box stores and Costco’s Canadian headquarters. Most of Nepean’s working residents commute to downtown Ottawa or to Kanata.

Centrepointe and Ben Franklin Place

Centrepointe was built to be Nepean’s downtown. Ben Franklin Place, the former Nepean City Hall, now holds City of Ottawa offices, the Centrepointe branch of the Ottawa Public Library and the Centrepointe Theatre, and the City of Ottawa Archives stand at Tallwood Drive and Woodroffe Avenue.
