What Riverside South is

A newer south-end community along the Rideau River, close to the airport, with family homes, parks and the O-Train Line 2. In the early 1990s the area was mostly vacant, with a few houses and farms. Today most of the built-up area sits around River Road and Earl Armstrong Road, and just west of Limebank Road.

The Riverside South Community Association expects the community’s eventual boundaries to be Leitrim Road to the north, the Rideau River to the west, a line halfway between Earl Armstrong Road and Rideau Road to the south, and Bowesville Road to the east. Growth is planned south toward Manotick and east toward Leitrim.

Honey Gables

The community also takes in Honey Gables, three much older streets on the west side of River Road, first built around 1950.

Why the Line 2 extension changed Riverside South

A light-rail line was meant to reach Riverside South by 2009, until council cancelled it on December 14, 2006. Line 2 was later extended to Limebank Road to serve the community directly, and passenger service began on January 6, 2025.

Limebank station is elevated, southwest of Limebank Road and Earl Armstrong Road, inside a large area zoned for commercial and retail use. As of April 27, 2025, OC Transpo routes 73, 74, 99, 110, 198, 283 and 299 connected there. Line 2 runs 19 km north to Bayview every 12 minutes, meets Line 1 at Bayview, and at South Keys meets Line 4 to the airport.

How to get around Riverside South

  • Limebank station on Line 2, with its bus loop.
  • Bowesville station, southeast of Bowesville Road and Earl Armstrong Road, with a Park & Ride lot that opened with 800 spaces.
  • The Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge across the Rideau River to Barrhaven, completed in 2014.
  • Limebank Road, which Wikipedia notes for major slowdowns in the morning as commuters head toward the core.

Schools that serve Riverside South

Riverside South has trustees on all four of Ottawa’s school boards. Schools in the community include:

  • Elementary: Steve MacLean Public School, St. Jerome Catholic School, École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître, École élémentaire catholique Jonathan-Pitre and École élémentaire publique Michel-Dupuis.
  • Secondary: Riverside South Secondary School and St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School.

École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître runs on a balanced calendar: a summer break three weeks shorter, with those weeks spread through the school year.
