Westboro and Hintonburg real estate

Westboro Homes for Sale

Westboro is a west-end Ottawa neighbourhood on the Ottawa River, with Island Park Drive on its east side and Richmond Road as its main street. It was a police village from 1903 until Ottawa annexed it around 1950, and most of its houses were built between 1900 and 1960, 71% of them detached.

What and where Westboro is

A walkable west-end neighbourhood along Richmond Road, with independent shops and cafés, and the river pathways and Westboro Beach minutes away. In the wide sense it runs from Island Park Drive west, with the Ottawa River as its northern edge. The Westboro Community Association draws a tighter line: the Transitway to the north, Tweedsmuir Avenue to the east, Carling Avenue to the south and Denbury Avenue to the west.

Westboro Beach, north of the village and west of Island Park Drive, has its own association.

Westboro was once the centre of Nepean Township: the old town hall on Richmond Road held the bell that became the symbol of the City of Nepean. Late nineteenth-century flyers sold it with “views of the Laurentian Mountains”, the Gatineau Hills that are visible across the river.

Streets that changed their names

Churchill Avenue was Main Street until it was renamed after the Second World War, and Roosevelt Avenue was River Road. Both were renamed in part because Ottawa already had a Main Street and a River Road when it took Westboro in.

What homes in Westboro are like

Most houses in Westboro were built between 1900 and 1960, and 71% are detached. Many cottage-like houses remain, especially near the Ottawa River north of Scott Street, from the years when the streetcar along today’s Byron Avenue park brought Ottawa residents out to what was then cottage country. Newer condominium buildings are adding density.

At the western edge, Maplelawn Garden holds the second-oldest building in Ottawa, built in 1831, and is a National Historic Site.

Why Richmond Road is the centre of Westboro

Richmond Road was the Macadam Road to Bells Corners, and where it passes through Westboro it is the commercial heart of the village. It carries a run of outdoor and sports stores, including Mountain Equipment Co-op and Lululemon, with boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops between them.

  • The Fuse Street Festival takes over Richmond Road for one weekend each August.
  • The Westboro War Memorial cenotaph, unveiled on June 8, 1985, stands in the park between Richmond Road and Byron Avenue.
  • Cycling trails and the Ottawa River’s whitewater are close by.

How to get around Westboro

Two OC Transpo stations serve Westboro: Westboro station on Scott Street, between Athlone and Tweedsmuir Avenues, and Dominion station, about 225 m from Richmond Road and Westboro Beach. Routes 11 and 16 run frequent local service along Richmond Road.

Since June 2022 the Transitway trench at Westboro has been closed for the O-Train’s Stage 2 west extension, with buses stopping at the curb on Scott Street. The extension will add Line 1 stations at Westboro and at Dominion, to be renamed Kichi Zìbì. They were not confirmed open when we checked on 2026-10-14, so check OC Transpo before you plan around them.

Hintonburg, east along Wellington Street West

Richmond Road runs east into Wellington Street West, the commercial strip of Hintonburg, Westboro’s neighbour in Kitchissippi Ward. Hintonburg is bounded by O-Train Line 2 just west of Preston Street, Line 1 along Scott Street, the Queensway and Holland Avenue. It was settled in 1826 in Nepean Township, became a village in 1893 and joined Ottawa in 1907.

What homes in Hintonburg are like

  • North of Wellington: mostly century-old wood clapboard homes, many of them small, built by lumber workers in the late 1800s.
  • South of Wellington: almost all residential, brick-veneer wood-frame houses from the 1910s and 1920s.
  • Two former lumber mills, on Hamilton Avenue and on Breezehill, were converted to townhouse developments.

Life in Hintonburg

The Parkdale Market, a warm-weather farmers’ market of about 20 stalls, sits just north of Wellington. The QUAD arts district dates from 2003, and the Great Canadian Theatre Company moved to its new theatre at Holland and Wellington in 2007. Connaught Public School is on Gladstone Avenue near Parkdale Avenue.

For transit, Hintonburg is reached from Corso Italia, Bayview and Tunney’s Pasture stations on the O-Train, and by routes 11, 14 and 16. Wellington Street is a busy cycling corridor, and the Parkdale exit connects it to the Queensway.
