Real estate in the Glebe
Glebe Homes for Sale
The Glebe is a neighbourhood just south of downtown Ottawa, in Capital Ward, bounded by the Queensway on the north and the Rideau Canal on the east and south. Most of its houses were built before 1914, much of it is detached homes, and Bank Street runs through it as a street of small shops and restaurants.
What and where the Glebe is
A central neighbourhood between the Rideau Canal and Bank Street, with boutiques, restaurants, Lansdowne and character homes on tree-lined streets. On the west it runs to LeBreton Street South, Carling Avenue and Dow’s Lake, and it includes two smaller areas with their own residents’ associations: the Glebe Annex, west of Bronson Avenue, and the Dow’s Lake neighbourhood.
The name is old. In the 1837 survey of Ottawa, 178 acres here were deeded to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church as clergy reserve, and “glebe” means church lands. The land opened for development in 1870, and the city’s limits reached the Rideau Canal with the annexation of 1889.
What homes in the Glebe are like
Much of the Glebe is detached houses from the early decades of the twentieth century, most of them built before 1914, when the Bank Street streetcar let workers live here and ride to work. Some are owner-occupied family homes and others have been divided into rental apartments, so ask early which a house is, and how its units are set up.
Several larger houses were designed by the Canadian architects W.E. Noffke and David Younghusband; others are pattern-book homes built by local builders, close to the foursquare houses found across North America. After 1945, postwar houses filled the last vacant lots, mostly on the streets just off Bronson Avenue.
Patterson Creek and Brown’s Inlet
Two arms of water reach into the Glebe from the Rideau Canal, Patterson Creek and Brown’s Inlet, each surrounded by parkland.
Why Lansdowne and Bank Street shape life in the Glebe
Lansdowne Park is in the Glebe. It holds TD Place Stadium, home field of the Ottawa Redblacks and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, and TD Place Arena, home of the Ottawa 67’s. The stretch of Bank Street through the neighbourhood is lined with small stores and restaurants.
- The Great Glebe Garage Sale, on the fourth Saturday of May, when participating households set out sales and give part of the proceeds to charity.
- The Canadian Tulip Festival in May, with the region’s largest tulip beds in Commissioner’s Park beside Dow’s Lake.
- The Glebe Community Centre, run by the community association, and the Glebe Report, published independently since 1973.
- Parks including Glebe Memorial Park, Central Park, Lionel Britton Park, Brown’s Inlet Park and Commissioners Park.
How the Glebe connects to the rest of the city
The Queensway forms the Glebe’s northern edge and Bank Street runs through it north to south. Since 2019 the Flora Footbridge, 123 m long, has carried people walking and cycling over the Rideau Canal to Old Ottawa East.
Centretown, across the Queensway
North of the Queensway is Centretown, in Somerset Ward, which the City defines as bounded by Gloucester and Lisgar Streets, the Rideau Canal, the Queensway and Bronson Avenue. Bank and Elgin Streets are its commercial streets. It mixes original single-family homes with infill, townhouses and apartment buildings, and a condominium boom since the late 1990s added many high-rise buildings north of Cooper Street. Questions
Questions about the Glebe
Why are so few Glebe homes for sale?
The Ottawa Real Estate Board’s monthly release does not count Glebe listings on their own. What the history shows is that the Glebe was fully built out after 1945, when postwar houses filled its last vacant lots, so homes come to market only as resales or infill. Ask us to watch for the kind of house you want.
What areas make up the Glebe?
The main Glebe between Bronson Avenue and the Rideau Canal, the Glebe Annex west of Bronson and north of Carling, and the Dow’s Lake neighbourhood beside Dow’s Lake. All are in Capital Ward.
Glebe or Westboro?
Both are older neighbourhoods of mostly detached houses. The Glebe is just south of downtown between the Queensway and the Canal, with Bank Street and Lansdowne; Westboro is in the west end on the Ottawa River, with Richmond Road. See our Westboro page.
Is Old Ottawa South part of the Glebe?
No, it is a separate neighbourhood, but it shares Capital Ward with the Glebe, Old Ottawa East and Carleton University. The Flora Footbridge links the Glebe to Old Ottawa East.
What should I check when a Glebe house has a rental unit?
Many Glebe houses have been divided into apartments, so it is a common question. Before you offer, confirm with your lawyer and the seller’s documents how the units are set up and whether they are legal, and what tenancies come with the house.
