Why the Greenbelt matters when you buy in Blackburn Hamlet
Blackburn Hamlet and Bells Corners are the only two Ottawa suburbs surrounded by Greenbelt land. Around the Hamlet that means National Capital Commission land, and RCMP land that was once the National Defence Proving Grounds.
The Greenbelt was proposed by Jacques Gréber in 1950, and the federal government began buying and expropriating it in 1956. The NCC owns 149.5 of its 203.5 square kilometres, and real estate development inside it is strictly controlled. So the Hamlet is ringed by protected land, not by the next subdivision. Day to day, that gives you:
- More than 250 km of hiking and cross-country ski trails on the Greenbelt lands around the Hamlet.
- The Green’s Creek toboggan hill, just next to the Hamlet, which the City of Ottawa maintains and opens with the snow.
- Budd Gardens, run by the two sons of Michael Budd, one of the people who built the Hamlet, on land now rented from the NCC.
What Blackburn Hamlet homes are like, and when they went up
The Hamlet as it stands was built after 1958, when the federal government gave the NCC authority to establish the Greenbelt. Landowner Michael Budd and Costain Estates Ltd. were key players in building it. Most of its homes went up in the 1960s and 1970s, the first residents moved in in 1967, and the community was renamed Blackburn Hamlet.
From Green’s Creek to Blackburn
Settlers arrived between 1803 and 1811. The area was first called Green’s Creek, after Robert Green’s sawmill, then Daggsville. In 1876 William Bradley and Robert Blackburn, later the Member of Parliament for Russell, secured a post office, and the name Blackburn followed.
Two clusters grew along Innes Road: Blackburn Corners, around today’s Navan and Innes Roads, and Blackburn Station, around Anderson and Innes Roads. Innes Road is named after Alexander Innes, who farmed further west and ran a toll road. Hamlet streets carry early settlers’ names, among them Kemp, Cleroux and Tauvette.
What the community association lists within walking distance
The Blackburn Community Association, the volunteer group that runs the community hall and local events, says most homes are no more than a 10-minute walk from a grocery store, medical and dental offices, drugstores, banks, a pub and restaurants. Its list of what the Hamlet has also includes:
- An outdoor community pool, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a splash pad and playgrounds.
- A City of Ottawa library branch, the community hall and the Lois Kemp Arena.
- The Hornet’s Nest, 11 outdoor soccer fields next to the Hamlet, with the privately owned SuperDome for play all year.
- The dome at École secondaire publique Louis-Riel: at 12,422 square metres, the largest air-supported fabric indoor recreation structure in North America.
How to get around from Blackburn Hamlet
Innes Road runs through the Hamlet, and Navan Road meets it at the old Blackburn Corners. The community association lists two bus routes serving the Hamlet; check OC Transpo’s current schedules for the stop nearest a home you like.
Inside the Hamlet, the association says, treed parks and bike paths connect it end to end, and the Greenbelt trails start at its edges. For a larger suburb’s shops and services, Orléans shares the Hamlet’s council ward, Orléans West-Innes.
