What Vanier is, and how Eastview became a city
Vanier began in 1908, when three communities joined to form the village of Eastview: Janeville, along the west end of Montreal Road; Clarkstown, north of Deschamps and west of Marier; and Clandeboye, further east between Montreal Road and Beechwood Cemetery.
Eastview became a town in 1913 and a city in 1963, and in 1969 it was renamed after the late Governor General of Canada, Georges Vanier. It stayed a separate city until Ottawa’s 2001 amalgamation. Rockcliffe Park, New Edinburgh, Lindenlea and Manor Park lie to its north, and the suburbs of the former City of Gloucester to its east. It packs a high population density into a small area.
Why Montreal Road and McArthur Avenue matter to a Vanier buyer
Montreal Road starts at the Cummings Bridge over the Rideau River, as the continuation of Rideau Street, and becomes Vanier’s main street through its commercial heart. It has been the community’s cultural core since the early 20th century.
The City’s Montreal Road District Secondary Plan, as amended on October 9, 2013, sets out where new building is meant to go in Vanier:
- Montreal Road and McArthur Avenue are designated Traditional Mainstreets, St. Laurent Boulevard an Arterial Mainstreet, and the Vanier Parkway a Scenic Entry Route.
- The plan aims to foster development and redevelopment along those mainstreets.
- Its Central Sector is the historic downtown of the former City of Vanier, where the Montreal Road stretch was long called the French Quarter, and new building there is to acknowledge that history.
- Lots on the east side of the Vanier Parkway are mostly large, and hold high-rise residential or office buildings.
So the plan for the blocks around a home matters as much as the home. Check the City’s current plan and zoning for the nearby streets before you offer.
The sugar bush, Beechwood Cemetery and Vanier’s landmarks
Vanier has the only urban sugar shack in Canada, run by Muséoparc Vanier in a 17.5-acre urban forest park, where sugaring goes back to 1939 and the Pères Blancs, the Missionaries of Africa. The Festival des Sucres fills it each spring. Muséoparc puts the sugar shack less than 5 km from downtown Ottawa.
- Beechwood Cemetery, the national cemetery of Canada and a National Historic Site since 2001, north of the old Clandeboye area.
- La Grotte-de-Lourdes, an outdoor Catholic shrine.
- Trille-des-Bois, the only publicly funded school in Ottawa based on Waldorf education.
- The Eastview war memorial, where Marier Avenue, Dagmar Avenue and Hannah Street meet, for citizens who died in Canada’s military conflicts.
How to get downtown from Vanier
Cross the Cummings Bridge west over the Rideau River and Montreal Road continues as Rideau Street, toward Lowertown and downtown. Rideau-Vanier Ward also takes in Lowertown, Sandy Hill, the ByWard Market and the University of Ottawa.
- Bus lanes on Montreal Road between North River Road and St. Laurent Boulevard, to speed transit at rush hour.
- St. Laurent Boulevard, the Arterial Mainstreet on the neighbourhood’s east side.
- Montfort Hospital, Ontario’s largest francophone hospital, on Montreal Road.
