What Old Ottawa East was: Archville, then a village of its own

The land between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River was the northeastern edge of Nepean Township, and the canal, begun in 1826, fixed the neighbourhood’s western edge. When Bytown became the City of Ottawa in 1855, the city stopped at what are now Gladstone and Mann Avenues, which left this area outside it.

In 1873 Archibald Stewart registered Archville West, one of the area’s earliest suburban plans, with the streets now called Greenfield, Montcalm, Havelock, Harvey, Concord and Echo Drive. On December 7, 1888 the county council approved the Village of Ottawa East, which governed itself until Ottawa annexed it in 1907. That history is still on the map:

  • Main Street, the central road of Archville, still runs through the middle of the neighbourhood.
  • Saint Paul University stands on land east of Main Street sold to the Roman Catholic College of St. Joseph in 1863.
  • The southern part of the neighbourhood is sometimes called Rideau Gardens.

Why Greystone Village widens the choice in Old Ottawa East

The centre of the neighbourhood is Greystone Village, on 26 acres beside the Rideau River that the developer, Regional Group, bought from the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 2014. It is planned around the Deschâtelets Building, a heritage scholasticate of the Oblate order, which the plan reuses for community amenities and housing.

Regional Group plans about 950 homes at full build-out, in five phases, with eQ Homes as the home builder:

  • Single-detached houses and townhomes.
  • Mid-rise and high-rise condominium buildings.
  • Rental apartments and a retirement residence, with shops and a central plaza.

So in one neighbourhood you can weigh a house on an 1870s street against a new home a few blocks away.

How Old Ottawa East connects to the Glebe, downtown and Line 1

Lees station, on O-Train Line 1, the Confederation Line, is south of the Queensway just west of the Rideau River. It serves the Lees Avenue area, part of Old Ottawa East, and the University of Ottawa’s Lees Campus, and Line 1 trains have stopped there since September 14, 2019.

The Flora Footbridge opened that year too, on June 28, 2019: 123 m long and 5 m wide, for walking and cycling, from Clegg Street over Colonel By Drive and the Rideau Canal to Fifth Avenue in the Glebe. It is named after Flora MacDonald.

Main Street and Echo Drive follow a road cut in the 1800s from the Billings Bridge area toward Lower Town, after the canal severed the older routes.

Saint Paul University, Main Street and the schools

Saint Paul University, on Main Street, is a bilingual Catholic university federated with the University of Ottawa since 1965 and entrusted to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Its Jean-Léon Allie Library holds more than 500,000 volumes. The Cuban embassy is on Main Street too.

Schools in the neighbourhood include:

  • Lady Evelyn Alternative School and Au Coeur d’Ottawa elementary school.
  • Immaculata High School.
  • The central campus of St. Nicholas Adult High School.

Confirm the school for a specific address with the board before you offer.
