What New Edinburgh grew from: Thomas MacKay’s mill village

Thomas MacKay, a Scot who helped build the Rideau Canal, bought the land where the Rideau River meets the Ottawa River in 1829 and named his village after Edinburgh. He built mills at Rideau Falls, laid out the village and settled it mostly with the people who worked in them. In the 1830s he built the country house that is now Rideau Hall.

The City of Ottawa dates the Village of New Edinburgh’s incorporation to 1867 and its annexation to Ottawa to 1887. Its streets are named for MacKay’s family: Crichton was his wife’s maiden name, Thomas, John and Charles were his sons, and Keefer was his son-in-law, Thomas Keefer, who later laid out Rockcliffe Park on part of MacKay’s estate.

Rideau Hall, Rideau Falls and New Edinburgh’s parks

Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s residence and grounds, and 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the Prime Minister, are in New Edinburgh. The Minto Bridges were built to carry a ceremonial route between Rideau Hall and the Parliament Buildings. The neighbourhood’s parks:

  • Rideau Falls Park, by the Rideau Falls, two falls about 11 m high where the Rideau River empties into the Ottawa River.
  • New Edinburgh Park.
  • Stanley Park.

Several embassies are here, among them those of France, India, South Africa and Spain. The neighbourhood has its own paper, the New Edinburgh News, and since August 2000 The School of Dance has used the old Crichton Street Public School.

Why the heritage district matters before you buy in New Edinburgh

The City designated the New Edinburgh Heritage Conservation District in 2001, under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act (by-law 2001-44), and adopted its district plan in 2016 (by-law 2016-95). The district follows the old village, bounded by Sussex Drive, Dufferin Road, MacKay Street and the Rideau River. The neighbourhood reaches beyond it, to Beechwood Avenue and Springfield Road, so check whether a particular house is inside.

The City describes what the district holds:

  • Buildings from as early as the 1840s to the present: large Queen Anne-style houses, row houses, single-family and semi-detached houses, and small apartment buildings.
  • The one- or two-and-a-half-storey house with a front-gable roof, the most common type in the district.
  • Traces of the self-sufficient village it was: former storefronts, churches and a public school, now closed.

The plan asks anyone undertaking a project in the district to contact the City’s heritage staff before starting. Before you offer on a house inside it, list what you would want to change and check it against the plan.

How New Edinburgh connects to downtown and Beechwood Avenue

Sussex Drive runs through New Edinburgh from the ByWard Market and Lower Town. On Sussex, the Embassy of France and the Centre for Geography and Exploration mark the two ends of the New Edinburgh stretch, and at the traffic circle beside Rockcliffe Park the road carries on as the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway.

Beechwood Avenue, the neighbourhood’s southern edge, is one of the City’s Traditional Mainstreets. South of it lies Vanier; east is Rockcliffe Park.
