What Carp is, and why a Carp address can be far from the village
Carp is a compact rural community in the northwest of the City of Ottawa, named for the Carp River that runs through it. By 1866 it was a post village of about 200 people in Huntley Township, with three stores, three hotels and a town hall. Huntley was surveyed in 1818, joined Torbolton and Fitzroy to form West Carleton in 1974, and became part of Ottawa in 2001.
Carp is also the mailing address for most of the former Huntley Township. So a listing that says Carp may be in the village, or on a rural road a long way from it. The township takes in these communities:
- Carp, the village on the Carp River.
- Corkery and Huntley.
- Manion Corners and Westwood.
Check where a home sits on the map, not only its mailing address, before you book a showing.
How the Carp Hills and the Carp River shape the land
The village sits at the southern end of the Carp Hills, about 4,000 hectares of mostly undeveloped rocky hills that run from Kinburn Side Road to Carp and the South March Highlands. They are an outcrop of Precambrian bedrock, an extension of the Canadian Shield, and nowhere else in the City of Ottawa has one. The hills have been compared to Gatineau Park.
Their wetlands feed the Carp River year round through streams and underground aquifers, and those in turn supply local wells. The river runs 42 km, from Kanata north to the Ottawa River at Fitzroy Harbour, and the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority administers its watershed.
Before you buy on a rural lot near Carp
- Confirm from the listing and the seller’s disclosure whether the home is on a private well and septic system, and make the inspections and water tests you want conditions of your offer.
- If the lot is near the Carp River or one of its creeks, ask the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority what applies before you plan an addition or a new building.
- Ask how far the home is from the village by road, since a Carp address can cover much of the former township.
Trails close to the village
- The Carp Barrens Trail, about 3 km, south of Thomas Dolan Parkway.
- The Crazy Horse trail, a 6.2 km loop that starts at March Road.
- The pathways at Hidden Lake Park, in the village itself.
Why the Carp Fair and the farmers’ market anchor the village
The Carp Fair was established in 1863 and has been held every September since 1880. Its Exhibit Hall is one of the few octagonal frame fairground buildings left in Ontario, and the red hall with white trim is still the focal point of the village. The rest of the year the fairgrounds hold the Carp Farmers’ Market, every Saturday from May to October.
The main street was once part of the Trans-Canada Highway and carried much of the traffic coming into Ottawa from the west. Highway 417 now bypasses the village.
What the Diefenbunker and Carp Airport mean for the area
The Diefenbunker, just north of the village, is a four-storey underground bunker built between 1957 and 1961 to keep the federal government running after a nuclear attack. It closed in 1994, the year it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, and it has been open year round as Canada’s Cold War Museum since 1998.
Carp Airport is 2.2 km south of the village. It is the only airport in the Ottawa area where private hangar space is readily available, so local pilots base their planes there. The City owned it until 2005, when a private company took it over with plans for an airport community and an industrial park.
If you are looking at homes near the airport, ask what is planned on the lands around it now.
How Carp connects to Kanata, Stittsville and the rest of Ottawa
Carp is about 33 km from downtown Ottawa. The Carp River rises in Kanata, through Glen Cairn, before it turns north toward the village, and the original village of Stittsville grew up along Carp Road. We do not quote a drive time to downtown, because it depends on where a home sits.
Schools in the Carp area

- St. Michael’s, in Corkery.
