What Old Ottawa South was: Rideauville, then a streetcar suburb
American and British settlers arrived around 1814, and for decades the area looked more to the Billings estate across the Rideau River than to Ottawa. Shortly after Confederation in 1867 a bridge over the canal opened it to the city, and it was tentatively called Rideauville.
Rideauville became a police village in 1905, and Ottawa annexed it on December 16, 1907. Around 1910 the streetcar reached it, turning around where Brewer Park is now, and the neighbourhood grew quickly. A few names from that history:
- Ottawa South, its name until the 1990s, when “Old” was added to tell it apart from the newer suburbs in the south of the city.
- The OSCAR, the community newspaper, short for Ottawa South Community Association Review.
- The Old Firehall, now a community centre.
What Old Ottawa South homes are like
Most of the houses went up as the streetcar suburb filled in. The style is mostly Craftsman, with many American Foursquare houses, popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and many have been upgraded and added to over the years, which gives the streets their mixed look.
About 300 homes and institutional buildings here are on the City of Ottawa’s heritage reference list, an inventory of buildings that may be considered for legal protection. Before you buy a house you plan to change, three questions:
- Is the house on the City’s heritage list, and what does that mean for the work you have in mind?
- Which additions and upgrades have been made, and were permits taken out for them?
- How old are the plumbing and electrical systems, and what does a home inspection find?
Why Bank Street and the Mayfair are the heart of the neighbourhood
The neighbourhood’s shops line Bank Street: pubs, antique stores the street is known for, and the Mayfair Theatre. A 2004 redesign buried the overhead power lines, added brick to the sidewalks and set metal maple leaves into them, each inscribed with the name of a Canadian folk musician.
The Mayfair opened on December 5, 1932, and is Ottawa’s oldest active movie theatre. It is a Spanish Revival atmospheric cinema and runs as an independent repertory house, and it was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 2008.
South on Bank Street, Billings Bridge crosses the Rideau River. The first bridge there was built in 1830 and the current one in 1916.
How Old Ottawa South connects to Carleton, the Glebe and Line 2
Carleton University sits across Bronson Avenue, on the same strip of land between the river and the canal. Carleton station, in the centre of the campus, is on O-Train Line 2 between Dow’s Lake and Mooney’s Bay. It closed on May 3, 2020 for the line’s extension and reopened on January 6, 2025.
North across the Rideau Canal is the Glebe, and to the east, past Avenue Road, is Old Ottawa East. All three share Capital Ward with Carleton University.
Parks and schools in Old Ottawa South
Brewer Park is on the north bank of the Rideau River at Bronson Avenue, across from Carleton University, where the old streetcar used to turn around. It holds:
- A speed skating oval and two smaller hockey rinks in winter, and the Brewer arena.
- Three soccer fields, three baseball diamonds, play structures and a mini waterpark.
- A community garden with a geodesic dome greenhouse, with Brewer Pool, an indoor pool, beside the park.
Hopewell Avenue Public School teaches junior kindergarten to grade 8. Confirm the school for a specific address with the board before you offer.
