Beacon Hill North or Beacon Hill South: what the listing name tells you

Montreal Road splits the neighbourhood in two. In the 2016 Census, Beacon Hill North had 9,177 people and Beacon Hill South 8,319. The Beacon Hill Community Association draws its edges at the Greenbelt and the Green’s Creek ravine to the east, Highway 174 to the south, and Blair Road and Rothwell Heights to the west.

Listing sites use their own area names for the two halves. On Google’s first page for this search on 2026-11-03, REALTOR.ca grouped the south as “Beacon Hill South - Cardinal Heights” and REW grouped the north as “Rothwell Heights - Beacon Hill North”. The smaller pockets inside Beacon Hill are:

  • Beacon Heights and Beaconwood.
  • Cardinal Heights, south of Montreal Road.
  • Rothwell Village.

Carson Grove and Cyrville, to the west, are their own neighbourhoods. Cyrville shares the ward with Beacon Hill, Rothwell Heights and Pineview, and Carson Grove straddles the old line between Ottawa and Gloucester. Check which one a listing is really in before you compare it with Beacon Hill sales. The areas around it are on our page of Ottawa homes for sale by neighbourhood.

What to check on a Beacon Hill home built in the 1960s or 1970s

Most of Beacon Hill was built in the 1960s and 1970s, so most homes here are around half a century old or more. That puts the age of the major systems at the centre of an offer. Before you firm up on a Beacon Hill home, ask:

  • What the seller’s disclosure says about the roof, windows, furnace and electrical panel, and when each was last replaced.
  • Whether a home inspection can be a condition of your offer, and what you want the inspector to look at first.
  • What renovations were done, and whether the seller has the City of Ottawa permits for them.

Why it is called Beacon Hill: the ridge, Ski Hill Park and Green’s Creek

The name most likely comes from a lighthouse in the Ottawa River, downstream from Duck Island, whose light could be seen from the top of the hill at Naskapi Drive. The lighthouse is out of use, but its foundation can still be seen from the bike path. The hill itself is a ridge that runs roughly parallel to the river.

Much of that ridge is the City’s Ski Hill Park. The open slope behind the Beacon Hill Mall on Ogilvie Road is a popular sledding and skiing hill in winter, and about two thirds of the park is undeveloped woodland with walking and snowshoe trails. The toboggan hills nearest the neighbourhood, largest first:

  • Green’s Creek, in Blackburn Hamlet, across the Greenbelt to the east.
  • Ski Hill Park, behind the Beacon Hill Mall.
  • Loyola Park.

What the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre is, and where it sits

The Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre, at 800 Green Creek Drive, is inside Beacon Hill’s boundaries. It is the City’s wastewater treatment plant, one of the largest in Canada, and it treats the wastewater of more than 90% of Ottawa’s population before discharging to the Ottawa River.

It opened in 1962 as the Green’s Creek Pollution Control Centre, and odour control was added during its 1988 to 1993 expansion. If a home you like is close to it, visit the street at a few different times of day before you offer, as you would near any large facility.

How Beacon Hill connects to downtown: Blair station and Line 1

Blair station, at Blair Road and Highway 174 on the southwest corner of the neighbourhood, is the eastern end of O-Train Line 1. The line runs 12.5 km west to Tunney’s Pasture, through a tunnel under Queen Street downtown, and the whole trip takes less than 25 minutes. The station sits beside the Gloucester Centre shopping complex.

A second station, Montréal, sits in the median of Highway 174 at Montreal Road, with an entrance on each side of the road. It is on the Line 1 extension east to Trim, which is built but was not open to riders on 2026-11-03. Its builder, East-West Connectors, reached substantial completion on 2026-03-04, a formal 21-day trial run has to come first, and OC Transpo has set no opening date.

Until it opens, Blair is the end of the line. Ask about it when you compare homes north and south of Montreal Road.
