Where Overbrook starts and stops
Overbrook has four clear edges: the former City of Vanier to the north, the Rideau River to the west, Highway 417 (the Queensway) to the south and St. Laurent Boulevard to the east. Inside them it covers 3.04 square kilometres, and the 2011 Census counted 9,650 people.
It began as a police village in 1922, and the City of Ottawa annexed it in 1950. Vanier, next door, stayed a separate city until 2001, which is why the two still read as different places on a map. The eastern part of Overbrook overlaps the Castle Heights neighbourhood.
The names a listing may use
Listing sites group the area in their own ways. On Google’s first page for this search on 2026-11-06:
- REALTOR.ca and REW used “Overbrook - McArthur”.
- Zolo listed Castle Heights on its own, with homes labelled “Overbrook/ Castle Heights”.
- Royal LePage used “Overbrook - McArthur” for its townhome search.
So a home described as Castle Heights may be inside Overbrook, and one tagged McArthur may be north of it in Vanier. Check the address against the four edges above before you compare prices. The neighbourhoods around it are on our page of Ottawa homes for sale by area.
Why the Adàwe Crossing matters: walking or cycling downtown
The Adàwe Crossing is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Rideau River that opened on December 4, 2015 and links Overbrook with Sandy Hill. It is about 125 metres long, with two lookouts at the mid-river piers. On the Overbrook side its pathway runs along Donald Street to North River Road.
On the far side, its pathway runs through Strathcona Park to Range Road and Somerset Street East. The bridge is part of the City’s crosstown bikeway Route 3, which continues along Somerset Street East to the University of Ottawa and downtown, and on to the Corktown Footbridge over the Rideau Canal.
About 20,000 trips were counted in its first ten days. From May to September it carries 90,000 to 110,000 crossings a month, split roughly evenly between people on foot and on bikes.
Two Line 1 stations, and the train to Montreal and Toronto
St-Laurent station is connected to the St. Laurent Shopping Centre, at Overbrook’s south end where Coventry Road meets St. Laurent Boulevard. It is served by O-Train Line 1 and OC Transpo buses, and by Megabus and Rider Express intercity coaches.
Tremblay station is just across the Queensway. The Max Keeping Bridge, a footbridge over Highway 417, gets you there, and Tremblay opened on September 14, 2019 on Line 1. It is less than a five-minute walk from Via Rail’s Ottawa station, though the two buildings are not linked, so the transfer is outdoors. The same footbridge serves Ottawa Stadium, the minor-league baseball park on the north side of the highway.
For a buyer, that means three ways out of the neighbourhood without a car:
- Line 1 from St-Laurent or Tremblay.
- Via Rail from Ottawa station, a footbridge and a short walk away.
- The Adàwe Crossing on foot or by bike, to Sandy Hill and downtown.
Queen Mary Street, Coventry Road and the St. Laurent Centre
Queen Mary Street is Overbrook’s main street, running from North River Road to St. Laurent Boulevard. Most of the neighbourhood is residential. The commercial and office buildings are at its south end, along Coventry Road.
The St. Laurent Shopping Centre opened in October 1967 and has 195 stores and services on three levels, plus offices, a gym, a second-run cinema and a career college. It is the third largest mall in the National Capital Region by total space, after the Rideau Centre and Bayshore.
The Overbrook Community Centre on Quill Street
The City’s Overbrook Community Centre is at 33 Quill Street, just off the Queensway, and the City describes it as newly renovated with environmental design features. It is open 9 am to 10 pm every day (read 2026-11-06), with:
- A full-size gymnasium with a sprung hardwood floor, and a dance studio.
- Weekday pickleball drop-ins, with badminton and adult basketball in the evenings (schedule for November 5 to December 22).
- An adjacent park with play structures, a wading pool and basketball courts.
- Media rooms and rentable space for meetings and events.
What to check before you buy in Overbrook
Overbrook is close to downtown and is seeing more residential infill, helped by the Adàwe Crossing and the footbridge to Tremblay station. That is good news for a buyer who wants to walk to work, and it also means the street around a home can change. Before you firm up an offer, ask:
- Whether a lot near the home has an infill or redevelopment application with the City of Ottawa.
- What renovations were done to the home, and whether the seller has the permits for them.
- How close the home is to the Queensway, Coventry Road or St. Laurent Boulevard, and how it sounds at rush hour.
Overbrook shares Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward with New Edinburgh, Rockcliffe Park and Manor Park. Just north, around Montreal Road, are Vanier homes for sale.
